How can Brazilian scholars say something that would be of interest globally and have an impact on the work done in the global North?

Luciane Kato Kiwara, Editorial assistant, ANPAD, Maringá, PR, Brazil.

“Context and theorizing in the global south: Challenges and opportunities for an international dialogue”, published in BAR- Brazilian Administration Review (Vol. 16, No. 3), discusses the challenges of publishing qualitative research based in specific contexts. Our interviewer is Dr. Güliz Ger, Professor of Marketing and Director of the Center for Research in Transitional Societies at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, and a part-time visiting professor at the University of Southern Denmark and SKEMA, France. Her research has been published in high impact international journals, such as the Journal of Consumer Research and California Management Review, among others.

Is this interview, produced by Maribel Suarez (UFRJ, Brazil) and Thaysa Nascimento (UFRJ, Brazil), Dr. Ger offers concrete examples of how to theorize strategies to overcome editors’ and journals’ prejudices and convince the international audience of the value of global-South research. It’s important to change from author’s perspective and think from the audience’s perspective, creating what is called as mental shift. Authors need to develop “sensitizing concepts” (BLUMER, 1954, p. 7) and/or potentially relevant theoretical frameworks as well as analytic perspectives; to figure out the debates in the field and in the journal; and to figure out how to position our work and frame conceptual issues, how to represent findings and conclusions so that data and theory cohere, so that the front and back ends of our paper cohere.

The language barrier is another issue raised in this interview as first barrier, since there are many different types of barriers, including cultural, political and economic ones. As Diniz (2017) and Farias (2017) argue, the main objective to be pursued by any journal is scientific and editorial quality, and publication in English is just one of the requirements for achieving internationalization.

We hope her arguments will be valuable to Brazilian researchers in their internationalization efforts. We invite you to visit us at our new website <https://bar.anpad.org.br>. Enjoy the reading!
