Experiments were conducted involving two types of genotypes (crossings and parents) and two types of disease management with fungicides. The researchers based their experiment on previous research on Asian soybean rust, such as Araújo and Vello (2010) and Hartman, et al. (2005). In the analysis of the data, a T-Test was applied for two dependent samples in order to verify the significance of the estimation of the rust effect. The rust effect comprises the losses caused in terms of productivity and grain size

The most important crosses were 104 (USP 14-01-20 x EMGOPA 313) and 149 (USP 93-05.552 x EMGOPA 313), considering productivity and tolerance. The evidence points to the tolerance to the Asian rust at the intersections and the parents evaluated. According to researcher Fernanda Pereira, these same genotypes can be used as parents in future research involving selection for greater tolerance to Asian rust whereas tolerance to rust tends to be more durable than Resistance to rust.

The Asian rust of soy is one of the diseases that has most concerned the producers and researchers in the area. Caused by a fungus, its management is given through a set of practices that ensures the coexistence between the plant and the pathogen, and that avoids significant damage to the crop. This research advances by detecting favorable responses from genotypes for greater tolerance to rust in various handling of rust with fungicides. For Fernanda Pereira, the novelty in relation to other research is the accuracy of the estimate achieved by means of a statistical test.

To learn more read the article “Rust effect estimation in soybean crosses for tolerance to Asian rust”, published in Ciência Rural (vol. 48, no. 3).

References

ARAUJO, M.M. and VELLO, N.
