Social Media and health governance

By Maria Cecília de Souza Minayo, Editor-in-chief and Luiza Gualhano, Communication Assistant, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil

There are now many mechanisms and possibilities to facilitate the circulation and sharing of information and knowledge among managers, professionals and users of health services, opening contact boundaries that allow faster, interactive, personal and adequate attention. However, much destructive information has also been conveyed, often terrifying the population, such as fake news about vaccines or the indication of unapproved medicines, among others.

The edition of Ciência & Saúde Coletiva (vol 23, No. 10), result of a public call, was led by researchers from the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (Fiocruz) and support from the CAPES Academic Excellence Program (Programa de Excelência Acadêmica – PROEX).

The authors present experiences on institutional reorganization, structuring of social networks around health issues and the construction of regional and local governance arrangements (FONTES, 2018; MAGALHÃES, 2018). Cyberculture, violence, ethics, social participation (AVELAR; MALFITANO, 2018) and the role of public-private relations and political regulation strategies in different territories (SILVA; CARVALHO; DOMINGOS, 2018) are topics explored in this paper (CASANOVA, et al., 2018; ALBUQUERQUE, et al., 2018). Negative sides of social networks are also approached, such as cyberbulling (FERREIRA; DESLANDES, 2018) and privacy issues (MORAES; PRADO, 2018).

Most articles present the perspective of understanding interaction models, care practices and the conformation of social identities in scenarios where the so-called digital activism can coexist with traditional mobilization flows and face-to-face encounters (FERIGATO, et al., 2018). Old dilemmas such as social control, democratic communication and health equity combine today with new issues linked to the rebuilding of social ties and bonds. It is important to walk in this direction.
