With global air traffic projected to grow by 4.3% per year over the next two decades (ICAO, 2024), the question arises: how can we keep the air transport system at cruising altitude amid the turbulence of today and the future? The answer lies in a holistic approach, relying on multidisciplinary and comprehensive research strategies to sustain this growth with maximum efficiency.
Aiming to facilitate collaboration between the scientific academia and industry for the optimization of air transport systems, the Journal of Aerospace Technology and Management (vol. 17, 2025) presents the thematic section Air Transport Systems: Infrastructure, Operations and Environmental Integration. This is an initiative that emerged from the joint work of the Brazilian Society for Air Transport Research (Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa em Transporte Aéreo, SBTA) and the Ceará Academy of Aerospace Sciences (Academia Cearense de Ciências Aeroespaciais, ACCAER), intending to expand knowledge and propose solutions for a more efficient, safe and environmentally responsible future in aviation.
The proposal is not based solely on infrastructure investment strategies but also on seeking guidelines for the modernization of sectors such as air traffic control, terminal operation and MRO, aiming to ensure efficient operations and consolidate the sector’s competitiveness. In the area of sustainability, in addition to pursuing zero emissions, it is necessary to mitigate noise, rethink airspace usage, and invest in disruptive solutions, such as more efficient aircraft, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations (2025).
Therefore, the launch of this thematic session is a call to researchers and professionals in the field, urging a collaborative commitment that is essential for advancing the air transport sector, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of operations with minimal environmental impact. In an era where technology and sustainability dictate the pace, a global dialogue sets the tone for air transport to continue flying high toward progress.
