In 2024, the journal Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz celebrates 115 years since its first publication with the editorial Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz celebrates 115 years of scientific publishing: what it needs to keep moving on… (vol. 119, 2024), and, to mark the date, it has launched a series of articles in which it revisits the topics covered in eight articles published in the inaugural edition of 1909, addressing technical challenges at the time, including studies on tuberculosis, diphtheria, malaria, amoebas and hematophagous insects, such as anopheline mosquitoes, which transmit malaria.

The discoveries of the causative agents of malaria (1880) and advances in serum therapies against diseases such as diphtheria (1893) and plague (1895) were recent and expanded the scientific output, especially around public health issues.

Interestingly, more than a century later, these same issues, such as tuberculosis, malaria and vector control, continue to be major challenges for developing countries, reflecting the continued relevance of these topics in tropical medicine.

The series of papers celebrating the 115th anniversary of the first edition of Memórias is not limited to a retrospective look at the challenges faced at the beginning of the 20th century, but also offers a reflection on the advances and lessons learned over time.

Despite its long history, the journal continually seeks innovation by aligning itself with the principles of open science and encouraging researchers on a collaborative and productive journey, with the mission of making the editorial process more efficient and enjoyable.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz is one of Brazil’s most traditional scientific publications, aimed at disseminating public health and tropical diseases research. First published in 1909, it continues to play a key role in medical science, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in tropical medicine.
